A map of the science of a fungal family

The insect-killing fungi are studied for crop protection and for medicine — across a family most of which is unstudied.

We tagged all 7,993 indexed studies of the Cordycipitaceae — Cordyceps, Beauveria and their kin, the fungi that parasitise insects and feature in both tradition and biotech — across 46 dimensions. The research divides between crop protection and pharmacology, concentrates on a handful of well-known species, and covers a family almost none of which has been assessed for extinction risk.

Every species in the family

The Cordycipitaceae are entomopathogens: fungi that infect and consume arthropods, then fruit from their bodies. We load every named species from a taxonomic authority and link each to the indexed literature. A species with no linked papers is recorded as unstudied.

This is the family of the prized medicinal Cordyceps, of Beauveria bassiana — the white fungus sprayed on crops to kill pests — and of the depsipeptide toxins that let them do it. COMPASS links each of ~654 accepted species to OpenAlex, tags every study through a domain-expert panel with adversarial cross-model judging, and geocodes each to its study site. The result is a census of a lineage that sits at the intersection of agriculture, medicine, and one of biology’s strangest life histories.

Two uses: pest control and medicine

Two research economies share this family. One studies it as a weapon against crop pests; the other, as a source of medicine. Between them they define the field.

The crop guardian

The family’s single most-recorded use is as a biopesticide — 2,639 studies (33%) treat these fungi as an agricultural input, and insecticidal bioactivity is the most common property recorded. Beauveria is the workhorse, sprayed to kill pests without chemistry.

The medicine

The other half chases Cordyceps: its β-glucans and depsipeptides, its immunomodulatory and anticancer activity, its place in traditional pharmacopoeias. Peptides and polysaccharides — not small molecules — are the signature chemistry.

The methods follow suit: culturing and antibiosis bioassays (1,858 studies) and fermentation and bioprocessing (1,220) dominate. Nearly six in ten studies are experimental. This is an applied science — a field asking, above all, how do we use them?

A few species carry the field

The research is highly concentrated. A couple of well-known genera account for most studies, while most of the family has little or no indexed research — including much of Cordyceps itself.

Beauveria, the biocontrol staple, is the best-studied genus — only a fifth of its species unrecorded. But even Cordyceps is 70% unstudied; Isaria, 91%; Torrubiella, 80%; Samsoniella, 79%. Attention centres on the “zombie-ant fungus” and the tonic mushroom, but most of the family — hundreds of species of insect-specific parasites — is unstudied.

Research on these fungi covers about a dozen species. Most of the rest are known only from herbarium records, if at all.

The conservation gap

For these fungi, conservation assessment is almost entirely missing. We do not know whether most of these species are threatened, because few have been assessed.

species in the family carry any IUCN conservation assessment. Fungi remain the great blind spot of the extinction record — neither protected nor even evaluated.

Conservation framing barely registers: threats appear in just 1% of studies, and where they do, the dominant one is that these fungi are themselves an invasive concern — a reflection of the biocontrol lens, not a worry for the family’s own survival. A lineage we deploy by the tonne against crop pests, and harvest by the tonne for medicine, is one we have made almost no attempt to conserve — or even to count as at risk.

Where the fungi are studied

The map tracks two traditions at once — East Asian medicinal interest and global agricultural biocontrol — led by China and India.

India (83 sites) and China (61) lead — India and Brazil through tropical entomopathogen diversity and biocontrol research, China through the deep cultural and commercial pull of medicinal Cordyceps. Korea and Colombia punch above their size. But most study sites are national-scale — this is a lab and cultivation science as much as a field one, and much of the family’s tropical range is barely sampled.

What the atlas asks of us

A family this useful, and this unexamined, is an opportunity in three directions at once.

Look past the celebrities. Research sits on a dozen species; hundreds of insect-specific parasites — each with its own chemistry for defeating a host — have never been examined. This is where new biocontrol agents and new molecules are most likely to be hiding.
Assess before you exploit. Two of 654 species assessed is not a data gap; it is a governance gap. A family harvested and deployed at industrial scale should not be invisible to the conservation record.
Join the two economies. The crop-protection and medicinal literatures barely speak — yet both turn on the same secondary metabolites. The peptides that kill an insect and the polysaccharides that modulate immunity come from one biology; studied together, each informs the other.

This atlas is one view of a larger queryable corpus. A single genus’s evidence profile, the biocontrol-versus-medicine split for any species, or a shortlist of unstudied taxa ready for survey are each a query away, on the same reproducible foundation.
