Desertification is measured far more than it is addressed, and rangelands and people are under-represented.
We analyzed 28,111 peer-reviewed studies on desertification, land degradation and drought — tagged across dozens of dimensions and mapped to 176 countries. The evidence base is weighted toward measurement over intervention, soil over social factors, and remote sensing over fieldwork. The UNCCD is convening on Restoring Land, Restoring Hope.
What this atlas reads, and how
Every claim below is scoped to the indexed scientific record . The corpus is a documented, reproducible set of studies.
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) frames its science around three linked phenomena — desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD) — and around Land Degradation Neutrality, SDG 15.3.1. To read that field completely, we harvested the deduplicated union of a versioned Boolean search over OpenAlex, then passed every record through a two-stage relevance gate: a proposer classifies each abstract, an independent skeptical model confirms or rejects, and a third model audits the boundary. The result is a clean core of 28,111 genuinely on-topic studies (a further 24,565 degradation-adjacent papers are retained but held separate).
Using a term is a weaker signal than engaging the topic. Only 15,446 of the core studies — 55% — use any of the three phrases in their title or abstract at all. The other 12,675 never say “desertification,” “land degradation” or “drought,” yet each is on the subject: soil erosion, salinization, rangeland loss, sand encroachment, dryland restoration. A keyword search on the three terms would miss nearly half of this field; classifying by meaning is what keeps it complete. You can put this to the test in the: search the corpus for desertification, land degradation or drought, filter it by country, and read the studies behind every count.
Each study is then tagged by a domain-expert panel — a fast model proposes tags, a second, stronger model reviews each against the codebook, and only tags that are in-vocabulary, supported by the abstract, and confirmed by the reviewer are kept. Measured against a held-out expert gold standard (August 2026): blind precision 81%, recall 57%. Every study is geocoded to its study site — the place the fieldwork was carried out — which locates the research where it was done.
What the field studies
Desertification research is predominantly about soil and measurement, documenting the drivers and processes of degradation in detail.
Far more studies measure degradation than test responses
Sorted by what each study does, the most common activity by a wide margin is monitoring degradation. About one study in seven tests whether an intervention works.
Remote sensing is increasingly used: of the monitoring studies, 7,143 use satellite data. Restoration is the most common response studied (8,111 studies, 29% of the corpus), and it is the one area where evaluation is more common than average — yet even here, only about one restoration study in four actually tests whether the intervention worked; the rest describe, review, or set a baseline.
The gaps
Three areas are notably under-represented, each aligned with a UNCCD priority.
1 · Human dimensions are under-represented
Desertification involves tenure, migration and livelihoods as well as soil and salinity. 27% of studies — 7,606 of 28,111 — engage a livelihoods or socioeconomic dimension; the remaining seven in ten are purely biophysical. Soil is the recorded medium in 57% of studies; economic or social data appear in 3%. Within that human subset, the topics central to the Convention are the least covered.
Tenure, migration, conflict and gender — central to UNCCD’s second strategic objective — each appear in under 2% of the corpus. Gender appears in 127 of 28,111 studies; migration in 300; conflict and human security in 200. The links most often cited in policy — that degradation drives displacement and conflict — are among the least evidenced in the literature.
Local and traditional knowledge is also scarce in the record. Smallholder farmers are the knowledge-holders in 2,356 studies and local communities in 1,517 — but indigenous peoples in just 175, and traditional ecological knowledge informs restoration in only 15. Pastoral and indigenous stewardship is largely absent from the evidence base.
2 · Rangelands are under-represented
Rangelands and grasslands are roughly half the world’s drylands and among its most degraded systems. Savanna & Grassland is the study ecosystem in 15% of the corpus (against 43% for croplands and other anthropogenic land); grazing and rangeland management is the intervention in 5%, and pastoral livelihoods in 6%. This coincides with the 2026 International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists.
3 · Decline is documented more than recovery
81% of studies describe land that is degraded or degrading. 5% document land that is improving or recovering. Whether recovery is rare or under-reported, the literature documents loss far more than repair.
Where the science looks — and where it doesn’t
Research effort and degradation burden are essentially uncorrelated at the country scale.
One country accounts for more geolocated desertification science than the next six combined. China hosts 5,229 core study sites; The African drylands, where degradation affects the most livelihoods, are studied far less relative to their degradation burden.
The skew is biogeographic, too. 29% of studies sit in the Palearctic — China, Central Asia, the Mediterranean, North Africa — against 13% in the Afrotropics, where dryland populations are largest and fastest-growing. The human-dimensions literature runs the other way: it is disproportionately African. Ethiopia is its second-largest contributor after China, and Kenya, Burkina Faso and Nigeria rank above their overall research share.
Cross-referenced against the UNCCD’s own indicator of degradation burden — SDG 15.3.1, the proportion of land degraded — the two are barely related. Ranking dryland countries by degradation and by research effort produces near-independent lists (Spearman’s ρ ≈ 0). Highly degraded drylands such as Somalia, Eritrea and the Gambia carry heavy burdens and few studies each.
The drift, over thirty years
The field has grown roughly eighteen-fold since the early 1990s, shifting toward remote sensing and soil science and away from rangeland and human-dimension research.

Restoration research kept pace with the field’s overall growth (a steady ~33% share); human-dimensions research declined, from about a quarter of studies to a fifth. The trend is toward biophysical measurement and away from the social and pastoral questions the Convention foregrounds.
Six patterns beneath the surface
The tags reveal finer patterns than the headline numbers — from how studies define “degraded” to how rarely they reference the relevant conventions.
What the evidence points to
Nearly half of all studies engage an intervention, and responses are matched to problems consistently. The small fraction that documented recovery points toward what works, but those signals are rarely tested.
Responses are matched to problems
Responses map onto processes. Each degradation process has a characteristic response: soil erosion draws soil-and-water conservation (2,187 studies), sand encroachment draws dune stabilization (609), and vegetation loss draws restoration and revegetation (2,878 and 1,683 studies). Salinization is an exception — 14% of studies, but with no dedicated intervention; it defaults to generic “restoration.”
What the field associates with recovery
1,403 studies (5%) document land that is improving. Cross-referenced with intervention, active revegetation and restoration are the responses most often present where land recovers — each in about 11% of their studies, two to three times the rate for soil-and-water conservation or agroforestry (~4%). This is an association, and it has not been examined systematically.
More often named than evaluated
Across the physical interventions, about a quarter of studies evaluate an outcome — soil-and-water conservation 28%, restoration 27%, revegetation 24%. The least-evaluated response is the one the Convention most directly controls: governance and policy interventions are evaluated in under 4% of the studies that invoke them. Policy instruments — tenure reform, subsidies, land-use rules — are described and modeled far more often than measured against outcomes.
