A map of the science beneath a standing-forest economy

An Amazon bioeconomy needs a portfolio of species. Its flagship family is three-fifths unstudied.

We tagged all 2,429 indexed studies of the Lecythidaceae — the family of the Brazil nut, the cannonball tree and the Amazon’s great canopy emergents — across 50 dimensions. It is a family whose economy depends on the forest staying intact. The research covers a handful of species well and the rest very little.

Every species in the family

We load every named Lecythidaceae species from a taxonomic authority and link each to the indexed literature. A species with no linked papers is recorded as unstudied.

The family is a Neotropical giant with a paleotropical tail: Bertholletia excelsa, the Brazil nut; Couroupita, the cannonball tree; Eschweilera, the subtly-flowered “matchbox” trees that dominate Amazonian forests; the timber genera Couratari and Cariniana; and the Old-World Barringtonia of tropical coasts. COMPASS links each of ~324 accepted species to OpenAlex, tags every study, and geocodes each to its study site. What emerges is a portrait of a family the world eats, trades and logs — and has barely begun to catalogue.

A bioeconomy that only works standing

This is the rare family whose economic value depends on not converting the forest. Its most-studied use is wild harvest — the nut you cannot plant your way to.

Nearly a third of studies touch some economic dimension, and the pattern is unmistakably one of a standing-forest economy: commercial processing, edible product, non-timber forest-product harvest and trade, rural livelihoods, and sustainable-use management. The seed — the nut — is the single most-studied plant part. The Brazil nut is its emblem: a globally traded commodity gathered from wild trees that resist cultivation, depending on intact forest, its orchid-bee pollinators and the agoutis that crack and disperse it.

One nut, three hundred unknowns

A resilient bioeconomy needs many species, products, and markets. The research so far covers only a few of them.

Research concentrates on a familiar few, and most of the family has little or no indexed research. Eschweilera, the most species-rich genus and a structural backbone of Amazonian forest, is 57% unstudied; Barringtonia, the Old-World coastal genus, 73%; Gustavia, 62%; Foetidia, 75%. Many are trees with edible fruits, useful timbers, and little-studied chemistry — potential products of a bioeconomy that still rests on a single nut.

The threatened go unstudied

As in the other families we have mapped, research runs opposite to risk. Here that pattern meets the bioeconomy case directly: the species with the most untapped value are also among those most likely to disappear first.

Among least-concern species, 45% are unstudied; among the vulnerable, 84%; among the data-deficient, 83%. Some of this is structural — a species is often listed as threatened because it is rare or narrowly ranged, the same traits that depress study — so it is an association rather than simple neglect. But the consequence is concrete: the very species a diversified forest economy might one day rest on are the ones being lost before they are documented. Conservation framing appears in just 7% of studies.

The research is concentrated in one country, but the resource is regional. Where the work happens and where the gaps are do not line up.

Brazil accounts for the overwhelming majority of study sites — 352 of them, against 52 in Indonesia and 25 in Peru. The Brazil-nut economy has made the family a Brazilian research subject. But the family, and its potential, are pan-Amazonian and pan-tropical.

Where the unstudied species are

Map instead the never-studied species, and the frontier moves off Brazil. The dark species concentrate across the northern Amazon and Guiana Shield — Colombia (43 unstudied species), Venezuela, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Guyana — and into the paleotropics: Indonesia, Malaysia, Gabon. Colombia holds nearly as many undocumented species as Brazil, on a fraction of the research.

What the atlas asks of a forest economy

Three moves, each turning a measured gap into an opportunity for a bioeconomy that keeps the Amazon standing.

Diversify beyond the nut. A one-product economy is a fragile one. Hundreds of unstudied species — edible Gustavia fruits, Lecythis monkey-pot nuts, Eschweilera timbers and chemistry — are candidate products no one has evaluated. This is where a resilient portfolio comes from.
Document before you lose. The species most likely to hold new value are the rarest, and 84% of the vulnerable are unstudied. A survey programme targeting threatened, undocumented Lecythidaceae is both a conservation and an economic investment.
Follow the resource, not the border. Research sits in Brazil; the undocumented species sit in Colombia, the Guianas and the paleotropics. A pan-Amazonian evidence effort would close a gap the national one structurally cannot.
