Antarctica is watched more closely than almost anywhere on Earth — and how it is governed is barely studied at all.
We analyzed 5,550 peer-reviewed studies on Antarctic and Southern Ocean science — tagged across dozens of dimensions and mapped to 468 distinct study locations. The evidence base is overwhelmingly about monitoring the ice, the climate, and the life on the continent; almost none of it engages the treaty system that actually runs Antarctica.
What this atlas reads, and how
Every claim below is scoped to the indexed scientific record. The corpus is a documented, reproducible set of studies.
Antarctica is the only continent run entirely by treaty — the Antarctic Treaty System, the Madrid Protocol on environmental protection, and CCAMLR govern everything from where a research station can be built to how much krill can be fished. To read the indexed science of the continent, we harvested Antarctic and Southern Ocean literature spanning ice, climate, and the biology of the species that live there, then tagged every study across a 51-dimension codebook: a domain-expert model proposes tags, a second, stronger model adversarially judges each against the codebook, and only in-vocabulary, evidence-grounded, judge-confirmed tags persist.
Measured against a held-out expert gold standard, tagging precision is 86% — when a tag appears here, it is very likely correct. Recall is lower, at 56%, so every share reported in this atlas is a floor, not an overclaim: the true prevalence of most patterns below is at least as large as shown, and the record is compiled to be measured, never assumed.
Every one of this corpus's 468 study-site coordinates was re-verified in August 2026 against each species' known geographic range and, where the location was ambiguous, re-resolved from the full geographic context of the abstract — the same pass that also caught and corrected sites that had drifted to the wrong hemisphere entirely.
What the field studies
Antarctic research is predominantly climate and environmental monitoring — biology, and especially governance, are a much smaller share.
The corpus is a climate-science corpus first
By knowledge domain, the picture sharpens further: nearly half the corpus sits inside climate and environmental science outright, with biology and taxonomy trailing well behind.
Methodologically, the corpus is closer to balanced: field study, modeling, lab analysis, and remote/desk-based observation each account for roughly a sixth of tagged studies apiece — a continent this difficult to reach still gets a real amount of fieldwork, not just modeling from a distance.
The gaps
Three patterns stand out: how little of the record touches governance, how concentrated the fieldwork is, and how concentrated the species attention is too.
1 · Governance is essentially absent from the indexed record
Antarctica's entire legal and environmental-management framework — the Antarctic Treaty, the Madrid Protocol, CCAMLR's fisheries limits — depends on science to function. Yet just 125 of 5,550 indexed papers — 2.3% — are tagged as substantively engaging Antarctic policy or governance (evaluating a fishery limit, a protected-area proposal, a treaty mechanism), out of a wider 91 papers that merely mention the Antarctic Treaty System, CCAMLR, or Antarctic policy by name at all — many of those only in passing (a permit citation, a station-operations note). The continent most dependent on an international agreement to function is one of the least directly studied as a governance question in the indexed literature.
2 · Fieldwork clusters on a handful of places
Of the 3,951 studies that carry a geolocated study site, those sites resolve to just 468 distinct locations — an average of nearly 8 studies per site. Antarctica is enormous and largely inaccessible; research concentrates heavily around the stations, coastlines, and features that logistics actually reach (McMurdo Sound, the Antarctic Peninsula, the Ross Sea), while vast stretches of the interior are represented, if at all, by satellite monitoring and modeling rather than site-level study.
3 · Species attention follows the same pattern: a handful get most of it
The corpus tracks 3,851 distinct species and taxa — a wide biological net. But research attention inside that net is just as skewed as the geography: 42 species — 1.1% of those tracked — account for 1,413 of 6,111 total species-paper links, nearly a quarter of all species-level research attention. The rest is a long tail: 94% of tracked species appear in only one or two papers. The most-studied are a predictable mix of the charismatic (Weddell seals, Adélie and Emperor penguins) and the ecologically foundational (phytoplankton, diatoms, Antarctic krill) — the animals visible from a ship, and the organisms holding up the food web beneath them.
Where the science looks
A south-polar view, not a world map — Antarctica sits almost entirely south of the crop line every other atlas on this site uses.
Nearly every trusted study site in this corpus sits below 56° south, off the edge of an ordinary world map. This view is centered on the pole instead: each concentric ring is a line of latitude, each spoke a line of longitude, and each dot a geolocated study site scaled to how many studies it carries.
